XTERRA Costa Rica Returns to Las Catalinas
Every athlete remembers that one race, the one where everything aligned: the grit, the scenery, the rhythm of the course, the thrill of crossing the finish line with the ocean and jungle roaring in the background. For many, that race is XTERRA Costa Rica in Las Catalinas.
Las Catalinas is no stranger to adventure, but few events capture town’s natural spirit and athletic energy quite like XTERRA. This internationally renowned off-road triathlon and its accompanying high-adrenaline challenges returned to Las Catalinas on August 21–22, 2025, offering athletes from around the world the chance to push their limits in one of Costa Rica’s most stunning coastal settings. Participating athletes found the ideal place to rest, refuel, and recover before and after the race, thanks to Las Catalinas’ Doorway.
This year’s edition was made possible by select sponsors and supporters including the local Santarena Hotel, Center of Joy, Copper & Stone, Papagayo Brewing, Pots & Bowls, Pura Vida Ride, Core by Chack Fitness, Coquelicot, and Tamaki Nikkei Sushi.
XTERRA’s Global Legacy Meets Costa Rica’s Rugged Nature
XTERRA is a race as much as it’s a global community, united by adventure, determination, and the quest to compete in the world’s most extraordinary natural environments. The Costa Rica edition, held yearly in the spectacular terrain of Las Catalinas, has earned a special place on the global circuit, attracting elite champions, passionate amateurs, and families looking for unforgettable experiences.
With its mix of rugged trails, turquoise waters, and dynamic terrain, Las Catalinas delivers a world-class endurance experience. Athletes dive into the Pacific for an exhilarating ocean swim, tackle steep climbs and technical trails on mountain bikes, and race through forest paths and along dramatic coastal ridgelines.

Competitive Event Energy in the Air
Race week in Las Catalinas pulsed with excitement. Athletes, families, and residents mingled throughout town, enjoying pre-race expos, as athletes checking in. Guided swim sessions, pasta dinners, and live entertainment were just some of the activities going on. The car-free layout of Las Catalinas enhanced the event’s sense of community, allowing visitors easy, scenic access to race viewing areas, local dining, shopping, and wellness facilities.
“This year, we reimagined XTERRA Costa Rica to bring athletes, families, and the community even closer together, and we succeeded. From redesigned race routes and elevated sponsor experiences to expanded prizes and adding a meaningful tree-planting initiative with COOPENAE and Las Catalinas’ forestry division, we’ve created an event that was unforgettable and impactful. This year, local businesses stepped up to enhance the experience for everyone joining us in town. It’s a race, a celebration of connection, endurance, and a legacy.”
