This August 24th and 25th, XTERRA arrives in Las Catalinas for an off-road triathlon that takes full advantage of everything the town has to offer! With the calm, warm waters off of Playa Danta right outside our front door, and single-track mountain biking trails through the hills, valleys, and cliffsides of the tropical dry forest reserve, the town is the perfect backdrop for such a prestigious event, and you’re invited to stay right here for the festivities!
One of the best parts of race weekends in Las Catalinas is getting to stay in town and feel the energy from all around you. Town is perfect for sports, but it’s also custom-built to support a sense of community, and there’s no better example of how this comes to life than during a big sporting event.
Whether you’re leaving out your front door straight onto the trails, chatting with fellow athletes after a run at Pura Vida Ride, or simply resting easy knowing that you’re right at the starting line on race day, there are countless reasons to stay with us in town for a big event. And with what we’ve got on the schedule, there’s a good chance you won’t want to miss XTERRA weekend.
XTERRA is the world’s premier offroad triathlon, and Las Catalinas has a rich history with the competition, with XTERRA world champion Rom Akerson a long-time participant in the Las Catalinas triathlon. Now, the full field of global XTERRA competitors will set their sights on Las Catalinas.
Over the course of the weekend, there will be a number of different events.
First and foremost is the Full Distance XTERRA Triathlon which features a 1.6K open-water swim, 30K MTB, and a 10K Trail Run.
The Sprint Triathlon at XTERRA Costa Rica is much shorter, but still a sizable task, with a race of 750 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of mountain biking, and 5 kilometers of running through these spectacular and challenging trails. Athletes can compete in this sprint as a team or individually, and it’s great for people newer to the XTERRA format.
For younger competitors, the XTERRA Costa Rica Kids Run is aimed to let future XTERRA stars shine, with a short race to help kids experience the joy of trail sports in a safe and supportive environment. Fun is the main goal here!
For dedicated trail runners, there will be a Trail Half Marathon, as well as a full Trail Marathon, for experienced runners with a true passion for conquering any terrain or mountain.
Top performers for these two elite competitions qualify for the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, but there’s something for every level in trail running, with the final competition being a 15.5-kilometer racecourse through the reserve that’s open to anyone who wants to challenge themselves in the heart of the tropical dry forest!
